All members must perform at least two service activities over the course of the semester, but the more you do the better. Just think of how valuable the experience is and how good it will look on your application!

Pleas Please be be considerate and let me know if you can’t make to an activity you’ve signed up for – someone else might like to take your place! Please e-mail Garrett Smith regarding service points and activities

Participation in activities is only open to members who have signed-up at a meeting. No surprises please!  Unless otherwise noted, we need to keep groups small.
Service Activity Descriptions:

Warm Hearth Retirement Home Visits:
PVC members and a service dog visit with senior citizens at local retirement homes. *Must sign-up at meeting – transportation from Litton Reeves parking lot.

Adult Day Services:

PVC members, and a service dog, visit with senior citizens on campus. Adult Day Services is different from the retirement homes, in that the seniors go home to their families at the end of the day. * Must sign-up at meeting & meet behind Wallace Hall.

Feral Cat Clinic:

PVC members help out with various aspects of the spay/neuter clinic; checking animals in, filling out rabies paperwork, clipping toenails, prepping animals for surgery, and cleaning surgical instruments. Great experience if you want to see surgeries up close! *Every 3rd Sunday of each month-need own transportation to Roanoke-email will be sent and you will contact Rigel Morgan k9rancher@gmail.com

Giles County and Pulaski County Animal Shelter:

PVC members lend a hand with walking dogs, cleaning cages, feeding, etc. Come spend the day - you won’t regret it. The animals would love to see you and the staff could really use the help! *Must sign-up at meeting. You can also go on your own time and email me your service points.

Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue:

PVC members will help out wherever we can; painting fences, mucking stalls, odd jobs, etc. *Must sign-up at meeting – transportation provided from Litton Reeves parking lot. Once you’ve gone with the club once, you can go on your own time and email me your service points.

Duck Pond Clean-Up:

PVC members pick up litter around the Duck Pond on campus. Come help create a better environment for the ducks and make the campus beautiful! We’ll supply snacks and drinks. And of course gloves and trash bags will be available. *No sign-up necessary – the more people the better!!!

MDL Dog Walking:

PVC members who have attended a training session may walk research dogs and visit the colony of research cats on their own time. Please be aware that these animals will be euthanized and could really use some love and attention. Service points not awarded for training, just visits. *No sign-up necessary for the training session or visits - the more the better!!!

PetSmart Volunteering:

Contact Lynn Chipkin (lynnchipkin@hotmail.com) to sign up for a day and time to go play with the animals and help clean. Email me your service points once we have gone.

V             Volunteer opportunities that do not qualify for service points:

Necropsy Rounds:
PVC members may observe weekly necropsy rounds in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital on Fridays from 12:30-1:00 and 4:00-4:30. *No sign-up necessary!
